Elly Beinhorn begeisterte sich bei einem Vortrag des Fliegers Hermann Köhl 1929 so sehr für die Fliegerei, dass sich noch im gleichen Jahr den Pilotenschein ablegte. Ihren ersten Alleinflug erlebte sie als Tor zu einer „neu geschenkten Welt“. Fortan stellte sie mehrere Rekorde auf und machte durch zahlreiche Langstreckenflüge von sich reden.
Bemerkenswert sind ihre Leistungen deshalb, weil die Ausstattung der Flugzeuge und das technische Equipment nicht mit denen von heute zu vergleichen sind. Mut, Ausdauer und fliegerisches Können gehörten dazu, um alleine in einer kleinen Maschine Kontinente und Meere zu überqueren. Mit 72 Jahre gab Elly Beinhorn ihren Flugschein freiwillig ab. 1991 erhielt sei das Bundesverdienstkreuz.
Auf dem Gemälde besteigt die Pilotin, mit einer dicken Fliegermontur bekleidet, ihre Maschine. Frau und Flugzeug sind in geometrische Formen zerlegt, was dem technischen Aspekt des Themas entspricht. Die Farben, zartes Grau, Blau und Gelb greifen den schimmernden Glanz der Metallteile ebenso wie das Blau des Himmels und das strahlende Licht der Sonne auf. Der Einklang der Farben unterstreicht die Verbundenheit Elly Beinhorns mit ihrer großen Liebe, der Fliegerei.
A lecture held by aviator Hermann Köhl in 1929 made Elly Beinhorn so enthusiastic about flying that she acquired her pilot’s license that same year. She described her first solo flight as a gateway to a “newly given world”. From that time onward, she set several records and made herself a talking point by going on numerous long-distance flights.
Her achievements are remarkable because the airplanes’ features and the technical equipment simply aren’t comparable with the airplanes of today. Courage, perseverance and piloting expertise are just some of the qualities required to fly solo across continents and oceans in a small machine. Elly Beinhorn voluntarily surrendered her pilot’s license at the age of 72. She received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1991.
In the painting, the pilot, wearing her chunky flying gear, can be seen climbing into her plane. Both the woman and the airplane are fragmented into geometric shapes, which corresponds to the technical aspect of the subject matter. The colors – delicate gray, blue and yellow – capture the shimmering splendor of the metal parts as well as the blue of the sky and the radiant light of the sun. The harmony of the colors reflects Elly Beinhorn’s affinity for her true love – flying.
